Dawn Lewis

In an earlier article, we discussed the benefits of chaga in tea form. Today we’re going to discuss reishi. Reishi tea is believed to have originated in China, where it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

The reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) is also known as the "mushroom of immortality" or the "divine mushroom." The earliest recorded use of reishi tea is in Chinese medical texts dating back to the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). The mushroom was used to treat a variety of ailments, including fever, cough, and diarrhea. It was also believed to have longevity-promoting properties.

It is said to have a variety of health benefits, including:

  • Boosting the immune system: Reishi mushrooms contain compounds that can help to stimulate the immune system. This may help to protect against infection and disease.

  • Reducing stress and anxiety: Reishi mushrooms have been shown to have calming and relaxing effects. They may help to reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

  • Improving sleep: Reishi mushrooms may help to improve sleep quality. They may also help to reduce fatigue and improve daytime energy levels.

  • Lowering blood pressure: Reishi mushrooms may help to lower blood pressure. This may be due to their ability to relax blood vessels and improve circulation.

  • Lowering cholesterol: Reishi mushrooms may help to lower cholesterol levels. This may be due to their ability to inhibit the production of cholesterol in the liver.

  • Fighting cancer: Reishi mushrooms have been shown to have anti-cancer properties. They may help to prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Along with the benefits, there are the following potential side effects:

  • Dry mouth: This is the most common side effect of reishi tea. It is caused by the mushroom's ability to increase saliva production.

  • Diarrhea: Reishi tea can also cause diarrhea, especially in people who are sensitive to it.

  • Headache: Headache is another possible side effect of reishi tea.

  • Nausea: Nausea is a less common side effect of reishi tea.

  • Dizziness: Dizziness is a rare side effect of reishi tea.

  • Allergic reaction: Reishi tea can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, rash, and difficulty breathing.

If you are considering taking reishi tea, it is important to talk to your doctor first. They can help you to determine if it is safe for you and to discuss the potential risks and benefits.

Here are some additional tips for taking reishi tea:

  • Start with a low dose and gradually increase it over time.

  • Drink reishi tea in moderation.

  • If you experience any side effects, stop taking reishi tea and talk to your doctor.
